WORKS IN SERIES: NATURE OF MIND and ELEMENTAL SOUL features the photography and paintings by LORI LANDAU. Landau’s two series, Nature of Mind and Elemental Soul explore the intimate connection between meditative and creative states. Through her painting and camera lens, nature manifests as a visual poem. This body of work illuminates the impressionistic essence of water, trees, wind and the soul within. With a deep reverence for the natural world, Landau captures that instant of the enigmatic spirit of her surroundings.

In the Elemental Soul series, nature becomes a medium for meditation and a conduit of light. As a long-time practicing yogi and meditator, Landau is inspired by the Buddhist concept of interconnectedness. She is fascinated with intuitive, subliminal states, an interest that leads her to seek dreamlike thresholds that link creativity and meditation. This focus takes her work to the edge of abstraction, impelling the viewer to reorder preconceived notions of the seemingly familiar. A spiritual nomad at heart, her photographs symbolize her exploration of sacred mystery.

In the Nature of Mind series, Landau began to document how agitation and meditation express themselves via her camera and paintbrush. Exploring the patterns of her emotions, these black & white photographs and paintings intuitively map the yin and yang of both light and what many cultures call “ the shadow side.”  This led her to a creative contemplation of the expression of different states of mind and how they mirror nature. Though these works are abstract, Landau began to notice watery faces and features floating up from the surface of many of her photos and paintings, supporting her belief in the very personal mystery that lies beneath the seemingly random surface of everything.  This is the artist’s 2nd solo exhibition at the gallery.
