IMMEASURABLE LIGHT is a solo exhibition of  luminous tondo paintings by KAREN FITZGERALD. This exhibit will run from November 7 - December 12, 2014, with an opening reception on Friday, November 7, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Circles represent unity, wholeness, and infinity; without beginning or end. It invites the viewer to be drawn in and contemplate the eternal. From the mundane, with the invention of the wheel, to the sacred, through the meditative construction of mandalas, the circle is a profound, transcendent symbol. Acknowledging the immense significance of the circular shape, Karen Fitzgerald has worked exclusively in the tondo form for the past 25 years with the intention of elucidating the "cosmic revelations" suggested by this form.

Fitzgerald's paintings are centered on the soul’s experience in the physical plane. Utilizing color as pure light and physical energy, she creates abstracted landscapes and imagery that connect the energies present in the everyday world with, as Fitzgerald states, the "spiritual-emotional-thinking-feeling-being-ness" of experience. The colors and the nuance embedded in each piece communicate what is in the mind and heart outside of verbal language and act as a natural container for stillness and deep reflection.

Many of Fitzgerald’s works incorporate thinned paint with gilding. Just as the artists of the Renaissance used gold leaf to signify spiritual aspects, Fitzgerald's gilding does not hold a decorative intention but instead is an indication of something beyond our physical world; that intangible essence beyond our five senses. Paint is added over the gilded surface and gilded ground. Whether in copper, silver, aluminum, 23k gold or 12k gold leaf, the gilding provides a distinctly sublime quality, infusing the work with a metaphysical light.  

Karen Fitzgerald’s work has been exhibited at the Queens Museum of Art, Islip Art Museum, Rahr-West Museum, Madison Art Museum, Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, the University of Arizona in Tucson and the United Nations in NY. Her work is in the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, DC, the Spencer. Collection of the New York Public Library, Brooklyn Union Gas collection, the Rienhart Collection of Germany, the museum of New Art in Detroit and many other public and private collections. Karen has a BFA from University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, a M.F.A. from Hunter College and M.Ed in Arts Education from Columbia University. Fitzgerald offers full-day gilding workshops at her studio in Long Island City, NY.
